Though not the simplest of renewable energy systems to install, hydro schemes have the capacity to generate substantial amounts of electricity, which can then be sold to your electricity company.

There are some very user-friendly materials available, but whichever insulation type you choose, protect yourself with appropriate clothing and a face mask. There will probably be a grant available to help you pay for the installation.    • Insulate your walls. If you have cavity walls, they are easy and quick to insulate, and in most cases it can be done in a day. Solid walls are insulated by placing cladding either inside or outside; it’s more complex, but worthwhile, as solid walls lose more heat than cavity walls.
