In February 1597, less than three years after entering Oxford, George was presented with a bachelor’s degree. He didn’t come by it easily, however. George received the degree by way of special permission that allowed him to complete his studies in 13 terms, rather than the 16 generally required for graduation. Sons of noblemen were almost automatically excused from at least four terms. But, having registered at the college as the son of a yeoman, George wasn’t automatically granted this petition.
